What is a Catholic imagination? Following St. Augustine, Flannery O'Connor observed *the things of the world pour forth from God in a double way: intellectually into the minds of the angels and physically into the world of things. To the person who believes this (or discerns this - an exercise so central to Ignatian spirituality), the physical, sensible world is good because it proceeds from and dialogues with a divine source. The artist exercising a Catholic imagination penetrates the concrete world in order to find at its depths the image of its source, the image of ultimate reality, the image of God. The beholder of the art follows suit. We will discuss these issues on their own merits and connect to Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy.
