Please join us on February 21st for the presentation of the Aichana Abeid Bolil Award to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky!

Loyola is pleased to work with the Abolition Institute to sponsor this event. The award is given annually to a distinguished individual who is actively involved in the fight to stop modern day slavery in the world. Congresswoman Schakowsky has been worked diligently in this fight for the last several years, and has been an invaluable voice for in battling slavery.

Sadly, slavery is alive and well in most of the world today. Mauritania in West Africa is one of the worst case scenarios, with open slavery practiced in the country. While this is technically illegal, it still goes on. The award is named after a former Mauritanian slave who escaped captivity, and who is one of the great inspirations for the modern anti-slavery movement. For more information on the work of the Abolition Institute, go to www.stopslavery.org

Please join us to hear from representatives of the Institute, including Mauritanians, and to hear Congresswoman Schakowsky's comments. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is co-sponsored by the African Studies and the African Diaspora Program, the Department of Political Science, the Global and International Studies Program and the Loyola Government Affairs Office.
