Join us for a conversation with Dr. Robert Di Vito, Chair of the Department of Theology at Loyola University Chicago and a specialist in Northwest Semitic philology and the Hebrew Bible. Dr. Di Vito will speak about his work in a team of editors and translators charged with preparing a new edition of the New American Bible (NAB), the English translation of the Bible used at Mass in Roman Catholic dioceses of the United States. Revision of this translation is guided by a complex network of principles, aiming to give balanced consideration to a wide range of sometimes conflicting priorities: new insights in Biblical Hebrew philology and textual criticism, current English style and usage, and the traditional usages of the Catholic Church. Students and faculty from all disciplines are invited to consider the complex task of translation, particularly when the text being translated carries authority for its readers and is intended for both reading and liturgical use. RSVP to luctsdh@luc.edu for a short text to be discussed at this lunch session. Sandwiches will be provided.
