Title: Evaluating the Abolition of Cash Bail Amid Concerns Over Violent Crime
With the passage of Illinois¿ Pretrial Fairness Act (PFA), on January 1, 2023, Illinois will be the first state to completely abolish the use of cash bail¿the practice where defendants post money to secure their release from jail pending the disposition of their criminal case. Loyola¿s Center for Criminal Justice Research (CCJR) is conducting a long-term process and impact evaluation of the PFA through a grant from the National Institute of Justice and a number of foundations. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the PFA, the research Loyola¿s CCJR is performing across a diverse set of Illinois communities, and preliminary findings regarding current practices and how these will change under the new law.
