Abstract: We will discuss how serious problems from biology and playful problems from mathematics surprisingly coincide. The answer to both involve developing algorithms within the symmetric group. I¿ll tell you the interesting story of how all these seemingly different topics meet within mathematics. We¿ll start from scratch and I¿ll tell you everything you need to know about both the biology and the mathematics and tell you about some recent results which are joint with Rhyker Benevidez. Anyone (including undergraduate students) interested is welcome to attend.
