*Accountability vs. Responsiveness: Trade-offs in the Realm of Social Services*

Steve Redfield, Chief Program Officer at Inspiration Corporation, will be presenting.

In the realm of social services, practitioners generally agree that the most effective services respond to individuals¿ unique circumstances. Those services are characterized by flexible programming, ongoing evolution of methods, and rapid redeployment of resources to where they can make the greatest impact.

At the same time, especially in an era of scarce service dollars, funders want maximum accountability for the use of their funds. Accountability is usually achieved through comprehensive regulations, pre-determined reporting requirements, and detailed monitoring of expenditures.

This seminar will explore the tension between responsiveness and accountability by looking at services for low-income individuals. How are these competing interests balanced? At what costs? How can service providers maximize their effectiveness while complying with regulatory requirements? How much regulation is too much? Are there innovative ways to rethink accountability?

CURL Friday Morning Seminars are held regularly on Friday mornings during the academic semester from 10:30am until 12:00pm in Cuneo Hall, 417. Loyola faculty, students, staff, community members, and guests are welcome. These seminars are a time for CURL graduates, undergraduates, staff, and community members to discuss their thoughts and experiences with community-based initiatives and/or relevant research.
