The Amaker Retreat aims to capture the spirit of our late professor, Norman Amaker, who fought alongside leaders like Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to transform the social justice landscape by challenging racial discrimination during the civil rights era. Our goal is to support the future generation of public interest lawyers. By increasing awareness of inequalities in the community, we hope to inspire students to embrace social justice values. The Amaker Retreat also helps build a network of resources by exposing students to local and national public interest leaders who have made a longtime commitment to serving people who face inequality.
This year's Amaker Retreat, Law, Resistance, and Social Justice will address timely issues in areas including immigration, criminal law, voting rights, and environmental justice. The keynote speaker will be Cornell William Brooks, president and CEO of the NAACP.
The retreat will be held at Loyola School of Law, 25 E. Pearson, Ceremonial Courtroom, 10th Floor, on Friday, March 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Meals and opportunities for discussion and socializing will be included as part of the day. The retreat is free. Law students, staff, and faculty from Midwest law schools are encouraged to attend.
