    Title: Hot Hands: What Data Science Can (and Can't) Tell us About Basketball Trends

    Abstract: Is the hot hand in basketball a real phenomenon or a cognitive illusion? I will describe a data-driven approach to this controversial question and explain how data science, despite its great contribution to sports, can go only so far in addressing some of the difficult underlying issues.

    About the speaker: Dr. Lisa Goldberg is a mathematical finance scholar and statistician whose current positions include Adjunct Professor of Economics and Statistics at UC Berkeley, Co-Director of Berkeley's Consortium for Data Analytics in Risk and Director of Research for Aperio Group. Prior to her work in finance and statistics, Dr. Goldberg received a PhD from Brandeis University in pure mathematics and held research positions at CUNY, MSRI, IAS and Berkeley. Dr. Goldberg is a recipient of a Sloan Fellowship and was awarded the Graham and Dodd Scroll Award for excellence in research and financial writing. Dr. Goldberg is author of more than 40 articles, a book published by Princeton Press and she holds five patents. Dr. Goldberg is also an avid basketball fan.
