    Speaker: Nathan Lopez

Title: A random triangle takes up 15% of its inscribing circle

Abstract: I¿ll explore some applications of calculus to geometry, specifically using optimization and the average vale of a function. The talk is aimed at undergraduates who have taken or are currently taking calculus 2 or above.

About the Speaker: Nathan first enrolled in college at UC Santa Cruz in 2009, before transferring to UC Santa Barbara and completing his Bachelor's degree in mathematics. In 2014, he was accepted as a graduate student by the department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at UIC to pursue a PhD in pure mathematics. In 2019, Nathan switched his research focus to Math Education and Learning Sciences; his current research project involves the effects that participation in professional development activities have on graduate students' balance between their teaching and scholarly activities, as well as their perception of that balance. Nathan hopes to finish this project and defend his thesis by the Fall of 2021. He lives with his partner Margeaux and their french bulldog Stella in Lincoln Park/Lakeview.
