Daniel Goleman brought the concept of Emotional intelligence (EI) *EI* to prominence as an alternative to traditional measures of IQ. He is an internationally-known psychologist who lectures frequently to professional groups and as a science journalist, reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times for many years. Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth. It is increasingly considered an important factor in improving outcomes in healthcare and not only in physician patient relationships, but as an intervention to prevent burnout and becoming an increasing part of what is taught within our medical school curriculum at SSOM.

This event is meant to involve *learners* at all levels and will include medical students, residents and faculty on the healthcare campus so, participation will be broad and likely significant. This will be the first time that such an event and a speaker with this reputation will speak on the HSC.
