From Challenges to Champions: The Trials of Black Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurs have changed the landscape of business and access to technology has enabled the entrepreneurial reach to extend well beyond regional boundaries. Entrepreneurs now provide agility and innovation once owned by large corporations. With all the great progress entrepreneurs have realized over the recent years, the challenges of entrepreneurship can still be insurmountable.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 20% of U.S. small businesses fail within the first year. By the end of their fifth year, roughly 50% have faltered. The statistics are even more staggering for Black entrepreneurs with failure rates of around 40% in the first year.

Though the statistics depict a challenging portray of the survival rates of small businesses, there is a growing number of Black entrepreneurs that have met and overcome these challenges to build thriving and sustainable businesses that are effecting real change in their chosen professions and areas of concentration.

In this installment of the Black Light Speaker Series, our panel of entrepreneurs will discuss the challenges of entrepreneurship and how they have faced these trials and tribulations to build thriving businesses that champion the causes in the areas in which they serve.
