Professor Catherine Smith, Chauncey G. Wilson Memorial Research Chair and Professor of Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, is a national expert in the area of children's rights. She has served as an expert advisor for the youth plaintiffs in Juliana v. United States, the high-profile lawsuit that argued the U.S. government violated children's rights by failing to stop climate change and co-authored an amicus brief on the constitutional rights of children that was cited in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark United States Supreme Court same-sex marriage decision. Professor Smith teaches torts, employment discrimination, family law, and sexuality, gender and the law. Her research interests include civil rights law and critical race theory.
Professor Smith will discuss strategies for dismantling systemic injustice in the area of children's rights, particularly as it relates to children from communities of color and LGBTQIA+ populations.
