Roseanna Sommers, PhD, will speak about public's views on the freedom to decline a police officer's request to search possessions. Her research finds that people think they would not be inclined to consent, but in hypothetical actual situations most people consent to searches. She argues that cognitive biases undermine our ability to judge the voluntariness of others' consent. The implications of her research for voluntary consent to police searches and to other authorities' requests will be discussed.
