    Happy Pi(e) Day!

Announcing the next iteration of the Rataj Lecture Series for friends of the mathematical sciences, sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Pies served from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Mundelein 204. Following the lecture, more pies and surprises courtesy of the Math Club. All are welcome to this super-secret post-lecture event.

Speaker: Sara-Marie Belcastro (Director of MathILy and author of Discrete Math with Ducks)

Title: Tiles on Surfaces / Matchings on Grids

    Abstract:
A popular problem asks for the number of ways to tile a 2 x n grid with 2 x 1 tiles. We will extend this problem and its solution to several surfaces. If time permits, we will survey what's known for m x n grids on surfaces and the methods used in obtaining these results. (Hmm. Why does this talk have two titles?)
