Amos N. Guiora is a Professor of Law at the University of Utah SJ Quinney College of Law and is a retired lieutenant colonel in the Israel Defense Forces. As the son of two Holocaust survivors, he became interested in the historical and legal consequences of bystanders, and brings the issue into current perspective. He has worked with the Utah legislature to introduce a bill that makes failure to call law enforcement if another individual is in serious peril a misdemeanor. Recent events such as the revelations of the abuses by Harvey Weinstein, Larry Nassar, and others, and the prevalent issue of sexual assault on campuses, all have highlighted the key role bystanders play in many criminal situations. Professor Guiora will be discussing issues and arguments from his internationally acclaimed book The Crime of Complicity: The Bystander in the Holocaust and raise questions of whether complicity should be criminalized, and if so, how that would affect racial and gender discrimination. His book will be available to purchase at the event or can be ordered in advance on Amazon. You can read more about the book at crimeofcomplicity.com.
